Tldevilx, you say? / Tldiablx, vi diras?

en: A few months ago, I found a treasure in Google Books...an artefact of a lost world. I am speaking, of course, about early magazines written in Volapük, the first noble candidate for The Universal Language. To read these early Volapük magazines is a proper education, and this article is a perfect example.

Mi rakontas, nature, pri fruaj magazenoj skribita en Volapük, la unua nobla kandidato por La Universala Lingvo. Legi tiujn fruajn Volapük-magazinojn estas pozitiva edukado, kaj ĉi tiu artikolo estas perfekta ekzemplo.

A RIVAL OF ESPERANTO (Rivalo de Esperanto)

In a late number of Le Volapük, the official organ of the French association, J. Sailhac of Marseilles quite amusingly burlesques "Internacia" and other would-be international languages of that ilk. His letter may be paraphrased in English as follows:

En freŝdata nombro de Le Volapük, la oficiala organo de la francia asocio, J. Sailhac de Marsejlo tre amuze parodias "Internacia"-on kaj aliajn eblajn internaciajn lingvojn de tiu tipo. Lia letero parafrazus angle tiel, kiel sekvas:

"I and two of my Cambridge friends have invented a universal language of our own, and out of respect for Volapük and regard for our city we have baptized it with the name Äkömaponapük, that is, language of the came-bridge [Äköm-pon-pük].

"Mi kaj du da miaj Kembriĝaj amikoj inventis universalan lingvon de la propra, kaj pro respekto por Volapuko kaj estimo por nia urbo, ni baptis ĝin kun la nomo Äkömaponapüko, aŭ lingvo de la venis-briĝo (angle "Came-bridge") [Äköm-pon-pük].

"Our language has this great advantage over Volapük and the languages of Esperanto, Henderson, Nicola and all the other learned chumps: you only need to know English to understand it perfectly. It is extremely harmonious, as every word ends with a vowel, and "u" is pronounced "oo." The only exceptions are the swear-words, to which we give the ending "x" and the prefix "tl" so as to make it impossible to pronounce them. Thus, tldevilx, tldeucex, tlhellx, tlthunderx.

"Nia lingvo havas tia grandan avantaĝon supre Volapuko kaj la lingvoj de Esperanto, Henderson, Nicola kaj ĉiuj da la aliaj kleraj stultuloj: vi sole bezonas scii angla-lingvo por kompreni ĝin perfekte. Ĝi estas extrema konkorda, ĉar ĉio vorto finiĝis kun vokalo, kaj "u" estas elparolinta "eŭ". La solaj ekscepcioj estas la obscenaj vortoj, al kio li aldonas la sufikson "x" kaj la prefikson "tl", por fari neebla por elparoli sin. Tial, tldiablx, tlekskrementx, tlinfernx, tldamnx.

"We rather guess we have realized at last the dream of all those duffers of whom you give the list in the Yelabuk Pediped last. Judge from the following example:

"Ni supozas, ke ni kreis fine la sonĝon de ĉiuj hobiistoj, kiuj vi listigis en la lasta Yelabuk Pediped. Juĝu el la sekvanta ekzemplo:

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS' EGG:
(La Ovo de Kristoforo Kolumbo)

A skoolu tearcheru aska wan dayu to his smallu skollaras, "Who wasa Kristofu Kolumbu?" Nonu skollaru gava a rightu answeru. At lastu the smallu Josefu raisa the handu and eksklaima, "I kno, I kno!" "Speaki, littlu boyu," responda the teacheru. Josefu responda "Misteru Kolumbu wasa an amerikanu ducku!" "Tlhunderationx, for whatu reasonu thinko yoo that he wasa a ducku?" crya the teacheru. Josefu answera, "Becausium me fatheru often speako to mi mamau about the eggu of Kolumbu."

(Ho ve, mi ne havas la kuraĝon por esperantiĝi ĉi tiun... Eble iu kun pli forta stomako ol la mia tradukus ĝin.)

"Very simple, you see. "U" is the ending for nouns and adjectives, and you observe that every verb ends in "o" for the present tense [speako], "a" for the past [responda, answera, wasa,] and "i" for the imperative [speaki]. There is just one thing, however, that astonished us, and that is that it only took us thirty-five minutes to invent Äkömaponapük! And yet you will acknowledge that our language is quite as good as Esperanto's, which our enemies declare to be infinitely superior to Volapük inasmuch as a man can read Internacia at the first glance after studying Greek and Latin for seven or eight years. When you get tired of Volapük, let us know and we will appoint you cifal of Äkömaponapük."

"Tre simpla, vi vidas. "U" estas la finaĵo por substantivoj kaj adjektivoj, kaj vi rimarkas ke ĉiuj verboj finas en "o" por la estinteca tempo [speako], "a" por la estonteca [responda, answera, wasa,] kaj "i" por la imperativa [speaki]. Estas nur unu afero, ke (astonished) nin, kaj tiu estas, ke ni nur bezonis tridek-kvin minutoj por krei Äkömaponapükon! Sed ankoraŭ vi agnoskas ke via lingvo estas tiel bona kiel la Esperanto, kiu niaj malamikoj proklamas kiel tuta supera ol Volapuko, ĉar viro legas Internacia-on kun la unua rigardo post studanta greka kaj latina lingvoj por sep aŭ ok jaroj. Kiam vi laciĝas de Volapuko, rakontu nin kaj ni elektos vin cifal de Äkömaponapüko."

Edit: Understand that this was printed during a time when Volapük was in serious internal trouble, and yet the American organization could still spare ink to mock Zamenhof's new project.  In a few years, Volapük-land was lost, and the era of Esperantujo began its ascent.
